Technical Preparation Guide:
Step-by-Step Setup Guide

The Interspecies Assemblies are held online.

As a Diplomat you will join an online community space to represent your Mentor Species wearing a digital Mask.

The Mask requires some setup and this guide will walk you through the necessary steps.

This guide explains how to install the software you will need to use your Mentor Species' Mask (Snap Camera), and the community software (Discord) used for the Assemblies.

Please allow about 1 hour to complete the setup process!

First, what kind of desktop or laptop do you have?

1. Download Snap Camera

To do this:

  • Go to the Snap Camera download website.
  • Scroll to the License Agreement section and click the checkbox for "I have read the Privacy Policy and agree to the Snap Camera License Agreement and the Terms of Service."
    * Note: you do not need to enter your email address to download Snap Camera.
  • Click "I am not a robot" and solve the CAPTCHA if asked.
  • Click "Download for PC" and save the installer to your Downloads folder.

2. Install Snap Camera

To do this:

  • Go to your computer's Downloads folder.
  • Locate Snap Camera 1.13.0.exe and open it.
  • Follow the installation instructions.

3. Open Snap Camera and make sure it can use your webcam

To do this:

  • Click the Start menu button or press your Windows key.
  • Type "Snap Camera" and click the app to open it.

Once Snap Camera opens, you should be able to see a preview of your webcam in the upper half of the application. If you can't:

  • Click the cog in the top right corner of the Snap Camera app.
  • Under "Snap Camera Settings", ensure your webcam is selected under Choose your camera.
  • (Optional: Turn off "Run Snap Camera on system startup")

4. Get your Mentor Species Mask

First, copy the Mentor Species Mask to your clipboard:

Then:

  • Open Snap Camera.
  • Locate and click the Search Lens search field. This is a text-field underneath the webcam preview in Snap Camera.
  • Press Ctrl+V on your keyboard to paste the Mask link.
  • Press Enter on your keyboard. After a moment, the Mentor Species Mask will appear in the search results.
  • Mouse over the Mentor Species Mask. You will see a small star outline in the top left corner of the mask preview. Click the star to save it as a favourite.
  • Finally, click the Mask to activate it.

You will see your Mentor Species in the Snap Camera preview!

5. Download Discord

To keep everyone safe during the pandemic, the Interspecies Assemblies are played online. Diplomats participate in the proceedings via Discord.

  • Visit the Discord website.
  • Click "Download for Windows" and save the installer to your computer's Downloads folder.

6. Install Discord and create an account

To do this:

  • Open your computer's Download folder.
  • Locate DiscordSetup.exe and open it.
  • Follow the setup instructions, then complete the Discord sign up process.

7. Join the Interspecies Assemblies Discord server

Click here to join the Discord server
  • The button above will open the Discord desktop app. Follow the instructions to gain access to the Interspecies Assemblies Discord server.

8. Test your Mentor Species Mask

Phew - nearly there! The last step is to make sure your Mentor Species Mask is working with Discord. To do this:

  • In the Discord Desktop app, click the settings cog next to your user profile.
  • In the left navigation list, under App Settings, navigate to Voice & Video.
  • Under Video Settings, click the Camera dropdown, and choose Snap Camera.
    * Make sure Snap Camera is running on your computer!
  • Click the Test Video button to see a preview and confirm everything is working.

  • Go to your computer's Downloads folder.
  • Locate Snap Camera 1.13.0.pkg and open it.
  • Follow the installation instructions.

3. Open Snap Camera and make sure it can use your webcam

To do this:

  • Open you Mac's Applications folder.
  • Find Snap Camera.app and double click to run it.

Once Snap Camera opens, you should be able to see a preview of your webcam in the upper half of the application. If you can't:

  • Click the cog in the top right corner of the Snap Camera app.
  • Under "Snap Camera Settings", ensure your webcam is selected under Choose your camera.
  • (Optional: Turn off "Run Snap Camera on system startup")

4. Get your Mentor Species Mask

5. Join Discord

  • Click Open Discord in Your Browser.
    For best results, use Safari or Chrome
  • Click Register (it's a text link underneath the login button)
  • Follow the setup instructions, then complete the Discord sign up process.

6. Join the Interspecies Assemblies Discord server

Click here to join the Discord server
  • The button above will open the invite in the Discord web app. Follow the instructions to gain access to the Interspecies Assemblies Discord server.

7. Test your Mentor Species Mask

Phew - nearly there! The last step is to make sure your Mentor Species Mask is working with Discord. To do this:

  • With Discord open in your web browser, click the settings cog next to your user profile.
  • In the left navigation list, under App Settings, navigate to Voice & Video.
    * Note, you will need to grant microphone and webcam permissions to your web browser!
  • Under Video Settings, click the Camera dropdown, and choose Snap Camera.
    * Make sure Snap Camera is running on your computer!
  • Click the Test Video button to see a preview and confirm everything is working.
